Each month's draw will be drawn on the first Friday of the following month. November's draw will be drawn on Friday, December 3rd and the winner will be notified by phone. The 31st of October has now passed and some of you still haven't lodged your 2010 Tax Return. Don't panic! As an added benefit of lodging through a Tax Agent, you can book an appointment in November without being penalised. Our goal is to complete all tax returns prior to Christmas, so if you haven't sent us your information or booked in for an appointment, please phone our friendly staff on (07) 5667 9483 to arrange a time that is convenient for you.

For those of you who have employees, don't forget that their December quarterly superannuation instalment is due on 28th January 2011.

Due to the festive season, the Australian Tax Office has given all client's a 4 week extension for lodging their quarterly Activity Statement. Your 2010 December BAS will be due for lodgement on 28th February 2011.

• Twelve month General Interest Charge (GIC) free payment arrangements
• Deferred activity statement payment due dates

These measures are available to businesses with a turnover under $2 million.

Businesses entering GIC free payment arrangements are expected to pay by direct debit.

Taxation Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo has warned the community to be aware of counterfeit ATO cheques supposedly issued by the ATO and drawn on Reserve Bank of Australia.

“The counterfeit cheques are realistic in look and feel authentic; only after being put through a fluorescent scanner are they revealed to be fakes,” Mr D’Ascenzo said.

The counterfeit cheques are being sent from overseas as advance payment for accommodation, quite often around or near universities. The cheques are made out for a few thousand dollars more than the asking rent, and there is an accompanying letter requesting the balance of the overpayment be returned to the sender via Western Union transfer. The shops are already filled with decorations, the kids are counting down the days until Santa comes and you cringe every time you hear that Christmas is just around the corner. Well the children aren't the only ones counting down the days until Christmas! The girls here in the office are eagerly crossing off each day on the calendar as it brings them one day closer to their long awaited and well earned holidays.

The Accounting ONE office will be closed from 5pm Thursday 23rd December and will re-open at 9am on Monday 10th January.
